THE THOMAS BARBOUR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS PROGRAM

Since its inception in 1968, our Scholarships Program has awarded $70,500.  During 2005, five scholarship awards were fully endowed to provide at least $1000 per year, in perpetuity. The first four scholarships benefit students at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. The George C. Scott Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a Theatre Arts student at the University of Missouri.  Our sixth scholarship, the semi-annual Claire Strakosch Scholarship is endowed by a separate fund, The Margaret G. Plumb Irrevocable Trust.  In 2007, The Thomas Barbour Memorial Playwright’s Award was established, endowed in his honor by a generous gift from Mr. Barbour’s niece, Janet Barbour Carhart, matched by his sister, Alison Barbour Fox, and from a portion of a bequest left to the Guild by Mr. Barbour’s Estate.  In 2008, a new scholarship was formed to honor Executive Director Emeritus Mart Hulswit for his legacy of service to the Guild.  This scholarship, when fully endowed, will be given to a student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.  To make a contribution to any of our scholarships, please contact us at 212-685-2927 or make a secure online donation here.

In 2004, the Episcopal Actors’ Guild’s Scholarships Program was named in honor of Guild Officer Thomas Barbour, whose Hornet Foundation had been the Scholarship Program's major benefactor.  Mr. Barbour deceased on December 29th, 2005, at the venerable age of 84.  His Memorial Service was held at the Guild's Headquarters, the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, which is renowned as the "Little Church Around the Corner" in New York City.  The Thomas Barbour Memorial Scholarships & Awards Program represents only a portion of the continuing legacy of good will and good works for which the Guild will always remember Mr. Barbour.
